Chester Health Authority was formed in April 1982, following the Health Services Act 1980, which established the present structure of the National Health Service. It is one of ten district health authorities, which together form the Mersey Regional Health Authority and comprises sixteen members and a part time chairman appointed by the Secretary of State for Social Services.
Chester Health Authority is responsible for all health services within the boundaries of Chester and Ellesmere Port local authority districts, with the exception of parts of Neston. The hospitals administered by the authority comprise Chester Royal Infirmary (acute), Countess of Chester Hospital (acute, maternity and mental illness and mental handicap), Chester City Hospital (geriatric), Ellesmere Port Hospital (geriatric) and the Manor Hospital, Great Sutton (mental illness and mental handicap). Records from all the hospitals have been deposited in the Chester City Record Office in accordance with the Public Records (Places of Deposit) Instrument 1985.
