The Salters’ Company existed in 1394 when they received a licence from Richard II but their exact date of formation is unknown. Salters traded in salt and various chemical preparations but as one of the smaller City of London Great Twelve Livery Companies, members have always been recruited from a variety of other trades and professions.

This archive was mostly created by the Salters’ Company and is completely owned by the Company. These records are useful to researchers in family, social, economic, political and local history, and include: Property records, including title deeds from 1216, wills from the 1450s; Finance records from 1599; Governance documents from 1607; records of almshouses and other philanthropic activities from 1609; administrative records, including minutes of the Court of Assistants from 1627 and minutes of the various committees reporting to the Court from 1821; membership records from 1636.

Note

Most records are in English but many property and governance records before 1734 are in Latin. Separate records of Thomas Weston's group of salt importers in the City of London are catalogued on Discovery as X.TW under the Salter's Company
