The donor's grandfather, Thomas Hole, farmed near Wedmore, co. Somerset. His father moved to Standford-Dingley, co. Berks in 1928. The donor himself farmed at first with his father and afterwards occupied a farm at Tytherton, co. Wilts. He returned to Stanford Dingley in about 1933, and remained there until 1948, when the farm was sold. After an unsuccessful attempt to purchase Frogmore Farm, Bradfield, co. Berks, he moved to Cranleigh, co. Surrey. In 1960 he finally acquired Frogmore Farm. Although he is himself an only son, three of his four cousins are also farmers. The family as a whole has been committed to livestock farming, but the donor ceased to supply milk in 1960 and thereafter concentrated on beef cattle and barley. He estimated that the farm runs at a loss, although the loss is offset to some extent by capital accumulated from the sale of farms held earlier.
