'Romeo and Juliet' was a version of Shakespeare's play set in the East End of London. The credits describe it as 'a Radio Ballad for schools' with songs by Ewan MacColl, script and performance by The Critics Group, music direction by Peggy Seeger, and production by Charles Parker. The actuality direction was by Ewan MacColl and the musicians were Bruce Turner, clarinet; Brian Daly, guitar; and Bobby Campbell, fiddle.
The actuality recordings were made in a different way from the Radio Ballads; instead of making recordings in the field, actors improvised several versions of scenes in the studio, directed mainly by Ewan MacColl, with comments from Charles Parker and Peggy Seeger (see MS 4000/6/1/48/1-17). The actuality used in the final programme was then taken from these improvisations.
