From 1847 to 1859 the additions to officers' records were made in separate annual volumes and each officer was given an identification number which remained the same for every year. For instance information on the career after 1846 of Mark Cubbon of the Madras Native Infantry [later Lieut Gen Sir Mark Cubbon] will be found in those volumes of IOR/L/MIL/11/50-66 containing the numerical reference 15, viz- IOR/L/MIL/11/50-51, 53-55, 57-62 and 64. Officers entering the Madras Army after 1846 have the single number reference only. Identification numbers were allocated before 1847 and numbers were shared by more than one officer. In some years, entries are left blank if nothing significant occurred. It is important to note that there may be no information about an officer in IOR/L/MIL/11/50-66: for example, if an officer died or left active service before 1847, his name may be removed. However, there are cases where information about non-active officers has been entered, such as the date of death.
