Captain Jonathan Scott financed a small chapel for the Independents in 1790. (It was later bought by the Freemasons). This Mill Street chapel building was gradually extended. A Sunday School was opened in 1810 and rebuilt in 1858. The burial ground was claosed in 1853. [W H Stephens: History of Congleton: 1970].
