Description

Humphry Davy to Lord Liverpool (?), 16¼pp, MS draft

The only motive he has in addressing his Lordship is patriotism. Is sure there will be great disappointment and feeling "dangerous to the government" if the opportunity is not taken to bring permanent peace to Europe by destroying the military power of France. Discusses Frances and the responsibility of the people for the actions of Napoleon. Peace can be achieved only if France is too weak to attack her neighbours; discusses this. Duty of the allies is to give France restricted boundaries "which shall not incroach upon the natural limits of other nations". Paris "has no claim to the dignity of being a capital sacred to the arts"; discusses this and his belief that monuments should be returned to the country of origin.
