LAUGHTON, Lieutenant, HUBERT HENRY SCHOMBERG, 2nd Battalion. Worcestershire Regt. Died of pneumonia 25 November 1918. Age 21. Son of Sir John Knox Laughton, RN., and Lady Laughton. Served in France from November, 1916 to October, 1918, when he was wounded at Le Cateau. K. 98. (Epsom Cemetery - United Kingdom)

Born 24/8/97 at 5 Pepys Rd, Kingston-on-Thames the son of John Knox Laughton (retired Royal Navy Instructor) [he pre-deceased his son] and Maria Josepha Laughton (formerly de Alberti). Educated at Kings College School and at London University. At the time of the war his mother Lady Laughton was living at 11 Stanton Rd, Wimbledon. His commission application is dated 12/8/15. Commissioned 9/9/15. To France 19/11/16. Joined 167 Company MGC in the Field 28/11/16. Proceeded as an instructor to Div Depot Battalion 21/5/17. Promoted Lieutenant 1/4/17. Returned from Divisional Depot 2/6/17. Ordered to join 2 Worcs Regt and joined 3/7/17. Admitted 32 Stationary Hospital Wimereux 9/3/18 (neurasthenia). Wounded 28/10/18 (gsw l thigh - slight) and admitted to 20 General Hospital Camiers. Died of influenza and pneumonia 25/11/18 at the Manor War Hospital Epsom. Listed as 2 Worcs Regt attd MGC. He left estate valued at £134. His brother Captain Francis Eugene Laughton MC served with 3 Cameron Highlanders. (Officers Papers - National Archive)

Sir John Knox Laughton (23 April 1830 - 14 September 1915) was a British naval historian and arguably the first to delineate the importance of the subject of Naval history as an independent field of study. Beginning his working life as a mathematically trained civilian instructor for the Royal Navy, he later became Professor of Modern History at King's College London and a co-founder of the Navy Records Society. A prolific writer of lives, he penned the biographies of more than 900 naval personalities for the Dictionary of National Biography. (See full Wikipedia entry)

Dame Elvira Sibyl Marie Mathews, DBE (née Laughton; 25 September 1888 – 25 September 1959), known as Vera Laughton Mathews, was a British military officer and administrator.
