Administrative / biographical background

Pre-1947, the Manchester and Salford Sunday Ragged Schools Union.

The Manchester and Salford Sunday Ragged Schools Union (M.S.S.R.S.U.) was founded in April 1858 by Robert Barnes, who was its first President and a generous patron. The main objectives of the Union were to encourage and help those schools already in existence by providing guidance and financial assistance, and to promote the establishment of new schools in the area, until "there was not a district uncovered or a child uncared for". (M546/6/1 p.6).

Originally twelve schools were affiliated to the Union, but that number soon increased. Each paid subscriptions to the Union and in return was awarded grants of money for various projects when necessary. Funds were also raised by public subscription and donations. The Union also made use of the "Fresh Air Fund", (founded in 1892 by C.W. Pearson, editor of Pearson's Weekly) to send children on outings to the Countryside and to the coast.
