Description (What the record is about)
-
This collection comprises an extensive series of letters from Lieutenant Thomas Ward, in service on the Western Front during World War 1, to his parents in Woodthorpe, Nottingham
Although often over censurious with military information, the detail of Ward's letters reveals a rare insight into the life of an officer. There are descriptions of his rations, billet, clothing and behind the lines work, all written with an uncomplaining, often humorous slant that was also employed in writing for a trench newspaper, one of many of the period. Altogether, there are some fascinating glimpses into life at 'the front' and because of the large quantity of material the most interesting are noted with references in the summary
