Administrative / biographical background

The Electrical Association for Women was formed in 1924, and Caroline Haslett, secretary of the Women's Engineering Society, became the first director. The aim of the Association was 'to interest women in the electrical development of the country'. Branches were gradually established, including ones at Newport and Ryde. The Ryde branch was set up in 1949, and the list of members for 1951 records the names of over fifty women. The membership fluctuated initially, but by 1977 it had risen to over one hundred. The branch, along with the whole Association, was disbanded in 1986
