Administrative / biographical background

The Church of St John the Evangelist was constructed on Preston Road in 1902, the old parish church of St Peter having been deemed too small and difficult to enlarge. The nave of St John's was completed and dedicated on 26 October 1902. The new church, built to the design of Arthur Blomfield and Son, replaced St Peter's as the parish church at the end of 1908.
