Administrative / biographical background

Stringer (1889-1969) was leader of the Labour majority on Coventry City Council 1938-67, having worked in the engineering industry, until blacklisted in 1932, and subsequently as a mutuality collector. He came to national notice in 1954 when he moved the motion for the City Council to abandon civil defence provision. The material described in this list was kindly deposited by his family per the University's Department of Politics. A further group of Stringer papers is held by Coventry City Record Office.
