Administrative / biographical background

Brendan Fulham joined the Mildenhall branch of the Electrical Trades Union when he started work as an apprentice for Reginald D Watts Ltd aged 16. He was sacked in 1968 when he was shop steward after he had stopped a job because of concerns about asbestos. He successfully took a case against the contractors who were required to reinstate him, but in the meantime he had been offered a job by the ETU as a recruitment officer which he took up. He worked for the union for the rest of his career, based initially in Ely and then for most of his working life in the Ipswich office. He was for many years the lead negotiator and trade union official for what was then Eastern Electricity.
