Description (What the record is about)
-
Compton Pilgrims’ Benefit Society was a Friendly Society established on 1 May 1835 by members of Compton Primitive Methodist Society [chapel]. Unlike many Friendly Societies it operated under temperance principles. Members received sick and funeral benefits.
By 1912 it had several branches and over 5000 members and was one of the largest Friendly Societies in England. By 1935 there were branch agents throughout south and west Berkshire, with some in southern Oxfordshire, north Hampshire, and Staines and Southall in Middlesex, and a total of over 13000 members. It was an Approved Society for the National Health Insurance Scheme, 1911-1947, and in 1928 a new savings deposit scheme was introduced.
The original insurance scheme closed and the deposit section merged with the Gloucester & West of England Holloway Society in December 1964, and the Compton headquarters (Fraternity House) was sold.
