Lieutenant Thomas Arthur Lloyd-Rees MC - Machine Gun Corps
Born in Aberdare, near Aberdove, Glamorgan, Wales, on 28 June 1893, son of EM Lloyd-
Rees. He was educated at Pontypridd Intermediate School. He trained as a Fitter. Tom is described
as 5 foot 7 inches tall, weighing 120 pounds, with a dark complexion and blue eyed when he enlisted
in the Army on 31 August 1914. He joined as a private soldier Number 18655 and was posted to 1st
Troop, "A" Squadron, 9th Reserve Cavalry Regiment, at Shorncliffe.
Tom's documents mention the 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars, which if he were sent to
that regiment, served in the 1st Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division in France.
On 8 February 1915, Tom applied for a commission in the Regular Army, and was granted a
temporary commission as Second Lieutenant in 13th (Service) Battalion The Welsh Regiment (2nd
Rhondda).
At some time, date unclear, John went to the 20th (Reserve) Battalion The Welsh Regiment
(3rd Rhondda) a training and holding battalion. He was probably sent from here to his MGC unit. He
arrived in France, and passed through the infamous Infantry Training Depot at Etaples, known as The
Bull Ring.
He was promoted to Lieutenant on 21 December 1916.
On 12 May 1917 attended a course of instruction at the Fifth Corps Infantry School. 16 July
1917 rejoined his Company (indicating he was part of the company previously). On 26 November
1917 awarded the Military Cross.
John is recorded as a member of 91st Brigade Machine Gun Company which was part of 7th
Division which deployed to Italy in mid-November 1917.
Tom left and returned to the United Kingdom, and transferred to the Royal Air Force, as a
Second Lieutenant, Observer, training to be completed 30 November 1918.;Other Notes: MC: LG 26/11/1917 (6/4/1918);
