Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in command of two machine gun positions, one of which was surrounded and bombed by the enemy. He, leading his team, rushed the enemy with bombs and revolvers and broke through them and forced them back under our artillery fire. Later, he visited his other gun and found the team missing, and although he, himself, was again surrounded, he evaded capture and killed several of the enemy with revolver and rifle fire.;

Other Data: Original Citation from 55 Div Records (Liverpool Libraries): recommended for DSO, by Capt G Clarke, OC "A" Coy, awarded MC on recommendation of Brig Gern Stockwell Cdg 164 Inf Bde: For gallantry and devotion to duty near Givenchy on April 9th 1918. This officer was in command of 2 mg positions on eof which was surrounded and bombed by the enemy. 2/Lt Stretch, leading his team carrying their gun kit and ammunition rushed the enemy with bombs and revolvers, broke through them and took up a position in the open. He drove back the enemy from this position and forced them under our artillery fire. Later he visited his other gun and found the team missing and although he was again surrounded, he evaded capture and killed several of the enemy with revolver and rifle fire. (Immediate award) - confirmed by Mag Gen Jeudwine, Cdg 55 Divn 14/5/1918
