Description

Family papers, photograph albums and scrapbooks. Records inherited and created by George Frobisher (1911-1997) in the course of researching and publicising his family history. Includes two day books used by members of the family in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and several 19th century photographs. The archive contains material about the explorer, Sir Martin Frobisher.

The collection is stored in an antique wooden box belonging to the Frobisher family and is arranged as follows:

Immediate source of acquisition
George Frobisher (d. 04/09/1997, Carnforth) deposited some of his papers with the West Yorkshire Archive S, George Frobisher expressed a wish that the papers be given to the Huddersfield Local History Society, but as they did not have a repository, the Society's Honorary Secretary and University's Archivist, Hilary Haigh, suggested in 1997 that they come to the University Archive. George's son, Keith Frobisher, therefore gave further papers to Huddersfield.

Administrative / biographical background

Family papers inherited and created by Keith Frobisher's father, George Frobisher, and passed to Keith on his father's death, 4th September 1997. George Frobisher took a keen interest in his family's history, tracing their roots back to the 13th century and undertaking a lecture tour of Canada. George Frobisher was survived by his wife, Mildred.
