-
Collection of maps relating to the Urban Estates accumulated and used by the Estates Department throughout its existence. Most of the maps cover the area of London as majority of the urban estates owned and managed by the Commissioners was located in London providing 97% of income from this type of property.; Standard Ordnance Survey maps were most often used with property managed by the Commissioners marked in colour with relevant deed, lease terms and ECE/7/1 [five figure files] names inscribed. ; General index to colours is as follows: ; 999 years lease- yellow; 99 years lease- red; sold - purple; Detailed key to colours please see file ECE/11/5/395; Numbers inscribed on property that are preceded with D are deed numbers, numbers preceded with F are ECE/7/1 file numbers and numbers without letters inscribed on the property are most likely leases numbers.; As the maps were in constant use for decades they also often bear other annotations describing particular transactions a given map illustrates. ; DATING: ; Please note that some maps are not dated or dating is based on when the date maps were published. Inscriptions, annotations and updates were added over years: typically a map published in the late 19th century was used and annotated for several decades. For instance ECE/11/5/214 was started c. 1868 and closed on 31 Dec 1921. However such 'closure' annotation is an exception: most of maps were not annotated this way when being closed.; Roman numerals in the title field denote the Ordnance Survey maps sheet number.; Also includes two indexes to London Estates Maps.
