Administrative / biographical background

Henry Smith (1548-1628), citizen and salter of London, established the charity which still bears his name. Among the estates forming the endowment of the charity are the manor of Warbleton, the rectory and tithes of Alfriston, a portion of the tithes of Mayfield, a farm at Telscombe and a fee-farm rent out of an estate at Bexhill.

The archive of the charity is deposited at the Surrey History Centre and these two documents must represent duplicate items from it.
