Estate 510/8/4dAn official notification has been received that Lieutenant Leighton Dalrymple Fanshawe, Machine-Gun Corps, has been killed in action, in France, on August 3rd, while acting in command of his company. He was the second son of Captain Frederick Bradford Fanshawe, late 2nd Royal West Kent Regiment, and Mrs. Fanshawe, of Hartwell, Coley Avenue, Reading, and a grandson of Colonel H. D. Fanshawe, of Friarsfield, Henley-on-Thames. He came of a very old Reading family, and an ancestor, Admiral Charles Fanshawe, who died in 1766, lies buried in St. Laurence’s Church, where a mural tablet to his memory was placed. The gallant young officer, who was 21 years of age, was educated at Mr. Fletcher’s School. Marlborough House, Reading, and at Tonbridge School; On the outbreak of war he joined the Honourable Artillery Company, and, for the first few weeks of 1915, served as a private at the front. He was gazetted Second Lieutenant, Royal Berkshire Regiment, on January 27th, 1915. and was with the regiment until the following December, when he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. Captain Fanshawe has received a letter from another officer, in which he states:—“ The surviving officers desire me to express to you their sympathy in your bereavement, and to say that we feel we have lost a very gallant gentleman. A friend, and a leader.” Captain Fanshawe’s oldest son, Hugh, is in the Royal Naval Air Service. (Reading Mercury - Saturday 18 August 1917 p2);
