Description

Before commissioners appointed for that purpose, Andrew Corbett, knight, and Robert Nedham, and Roland Lacon, Esqs. Inquisition throughoaths of Richard Lister gent, William Barkeley, Francis Harnage, Jeremy Whorwood, Richard Lloid of Aston, Richard Spenser, Hugh Higgins, Leonard Lyster, gents, Richard Warde, yeoman, William Hordley, Richard Reynolds, Thomas Bayley, Roger Poyner, yeomen. Stated that Sir Francis Englefield had with royal licence gone abroad, but did not know when the licence expired. Said that he remained overseas, contrary to Queen's proclamation and Act of Parliament against fugitives 13 Elizabeth (1570).

At the time of his departure Francis Englefield was seised of divers lands and tenements in Up Rossall and Udlington, of annual rent £8.6.8d in tenure of Richard Sandford, gent, and 1 tenement with appurtenances in Up Rossall and Udlington in tenure of Hugh Braddocke, annual rent £3, 1 tenement in tenure of Roger Griffithes annual rent £3.6.0d. of 1 in tenure of Richard Wylliams annual rent 19s.4d. 1 pasture in Up Rossall & Udlington called Little Udlington, in tenure of Thomas Davies, rent 10s, 2 pastures in Up Rossall and Udlington called Le Werefieldes, in tenure of Katherine Yevance, widow, rent 53s 4d, 1 fish pond in Up Rossall in tenure of Richard Mytton, rent 3s4d 1 tenement in Yeton and Agdon in tenure of Thomas Baker jnr, rent 34s.10d, 1 tenement in Yeton and Agdon late in tenure of Thomas Brayne,decd, rent 35s.10d, 1 tenement in Yeton and Agdon in tenure of Richard Skott, rent 30s.4d, 1 tenement in Yeton and Agdon in tenure of John Porter, rent 28s.10d, 1 tenement in Yeton and Agdon in tenure of Thomas Baker snr, 13s.4d 1 pasture in Agdon called Agdon in tenure of William Hicken, rent 13s.4d, 1 water mill in Yeton in tenure of Richard Sandford, rent 37s. Above tenants now hold premises of Queen, by virtue of letters patent under the Exchequer Seal directed to Richard Sandford and Thomas Baker jnr, 17 June 15 Elizabeth (1573), the premises having fallen to the Queen by forfeiture by Englefield as more fully appears by an inquest still on record taken at Shrewsbury 8 June 13 Elizabeth (1571)

Jury added that Sir Francis Englefield at the time of his prosecution and afterwards was seised in his demise as of fee of 1 tenement in Up Rossall and Udlington, rent £6.10s in tenure of Hugh Jeffreyes who holds it of the Queen, by an assignment made by Edward Redheade to him 20 April 15 Elizabeth (1573); Edward held the tenement by letters patent of the Queen under Exchequer Seal 14 February 15 Elizabeth (1572/3) and the Queen holds it by reason of the forfeiture. And Englefield at the time of his distress and afterwards was seised in 1 tenement in Yeton and Agdon in the tenure of Isabelle Brayne, widow, rent 27s.8d which Isabelle holds by a grant made by Englefield to Wm.Brayne decd. late husband of Isabelle and to Isabelle and John their son for their lives and of the longest liver,26 Sept 1.Edward VI (1547);and Englefield was seised in 1 pasture in Up Rossall & Udlington called Udlington in tenure of Thomas Styrrye,Esq. rent £8, 1 cottage in Yeton in tenure of Richard Davies, rent 8s, 1 cottage in tenure of Thomas Wright, rent 6s8d They all now hold of the Queen by reason of the forfeiture 12s1d chief rents from lands and tenements in the fee of Up Rossall, Yeton & Udlington, and Englefield was yearly paid by the heir of Wollascott for Wollascott 12d by Thomas Styrrye Esq for a certain pasture called Le Heylde 3/-, by the heir of Sandford for land in Yeton 8/- and by John Rogers for land in Yeton 1d and all the lands, rents and services amount to £45.17s. 7d. from which is deducted of the Queen for chief rent 2/- p.a. The jurors present that on the day of the taking of the said inquest he was possessed of one black ox which had come by heriot to Francis after the death of Helen Williams, widow, valued at 36/8 and that the ox is answered for to the Queen by Richard Sandsford by reason of the said inquest.

Richard Sandford is receiver of all profits, rents and issues of the lands and tenements as bailiff for the Queen for her proper use. There remains in Sandford's hands half a year's rents due to the Queen at the Annunciation last for the lands in tenure of Thos. Stirrie, Richard Davies, Thos.Wrighte and Isabelle Brayne and for the chief rents £5.9.3d.

There remains unpaid in the hands of Richard Sandford for half rent of one year due to the Queen at the Annunciation last for all lands and tenements £21.11s.9d There also remains in Sandford's hands for half year's rents due to the Queen at Michaelmas last from lands of ............ and for chief rents £5. 9s. 3d.

That all other rents of the premises have been annually accounted for as appears by letters of acquittance remaining to Richard for payment of those rents made to hi by Andrew Corbett and Arthur Maynwaringe, knts, and Humffrey Burderr, gent, and there remains in the custody of Richard Sandford one black ox which came to the Queen as a heriot on the death of William Brayne, late tenant, worth 53/4.
