Under the Public Health Act of 1872 (35 and 36 Vict., c.79) the guardians of a Union were transformed into a Rural Sanitary Authority for the purposes of that Act. Rural Sanitary Authorities were abolished by the Local Government Act of 1894, and their functions taken over by the Rural District Councils.
