I am directed to inform you that as the result
of an enquiry at the Base the following report has been
received concerning Lieutenant Colonel R H N. 8ettle,BSO.
B.C. , 19th Hussars attached Machine Gun fiorps:-
"No. 19450 Serjeant W.Fisher. 21et Machine Gun
Corps, has been interrogated and states as follows
’On 24.3.18. I was standing in a trench near
•Cleary. I saw Lt. Col.B.H.N.Settle and hie Adjt.
’Capt.Pope about 80 yards away from me on my left
’watching the front with field glasses. After an
’ interval I heard the explosion of a shell and I
*lootaritowards the spot where Lt.Col.Settle had been
’standing. I just saw both him and Capt.Pope fall
’in a heap obviotitely instantaneously killed. We
’were unable to move towards the spot where these
•Officers fell as the enemp appeared right on us
’and we had already been ordered to withdraw."
This evidence, it will be seen, confirms the decision of
the Army Council which was communicated to
you on 23rd October,1918, and I am again to express
their sympathy with you in your bereavement. I am to
add that publication will now be made in the official
casualty list.I am Madam

He was C*0* of 21st Battni We were fighting a
rearguard action during our retreat 3 or 4 days after Jerry started
his offensive in liar oh. Our position was at a snail village oalled
Clery in a wood on the Albert Sector. I was with ay h,G* at the
edge of the wood* Col. Settle was with another Officer • probably
the Adjutant - eome 25 or 50 yards in front of me, standing in a
trench to the left inoline of my H.G* He had been trying to
organise a Batty*of LfcOuns at the time, early in the morning,
when I saw a shell burst praotioally over him: he was blown to bits;
the other Offioer was wounded* I do not think many others oould
have seen it In the spot where he was standing* We evacuated the
village and wood about 10 minsiafter I saw him killed*
