By a private act of 1 Wm and Mary sess 1, c18 'for erecting Courts of Conscience in the Cities of Bristol and Gloucester and the Liberties thereof' a court was established in 1689 for the recovery of debts under 40s. This act was made a public act by 27 Geo II, c16.
