Records of Arthur Tester Ltd, builders, 312 Bexhill Road, St Leonards, 1934 - 65

Arthur Tester was born 12 Dec 1893 at 9 Church Street, Bexhill, the youngest son of Albert and Mary Tester. He was apprenticed as a carpenter to J Rogers and Son, builders in Bexhill and worked with them and other local firms (for a list see AMS5993/2), including a period of work in Hampshire when work in Bexhill was scarce

In 1930 he started to work from home as a builder and decorator and after a period in a rented garage in Bulverhithe, moved in 1934 to 312 Bexhill Road, St Leonards and built a workshop. During the second war Tester served as a special constable and worked extensively for the War Damage Commission and the Borough Council; his active service in the first war is listed in AMS5993/1. Business expanded in the 1950s and in 1952 the firm became a limited company; more workshops and offices were built at Bexhill Road. Mr Tester retired in 1965 due to ill-health and died in 1967
