Administrative / biographical background

These photographs were taken by the donor's grandfather, Mr R W Copeman of Bristol, who was President of Bristol Stereoscopic Society. R Copeman was born in 1861 in Suffolk but later moved to Somerset. He lived at Henstridge and then Wincanton, where he and his wife were Master and Mistress of the workhouse. He later worked in Lloyds Bank, Stokes Croft, Bristol.

Mr Copeman used to take his camera with him by train on visits and holidays. Some of the prints in this collection are the work of another member of the Stereoscopic Society, W Grove; the photographs of Tewkesbury and Gloucester Cathedral were taken on outings of the society. Some of the photographs have notes on the back, which have been included in the catalogue descriptions. All photographs were hand-processed, with two copies mounted on black card for use with a stereoscopic hand viewer.

Other photographs taken by R Copeman (including a few of Bristol) are held at Somerset Record Office and other county record offices.
