Title
Brook Bridges Manuscripts, Part 1
Date
1491-1913
Description

Deeds and estate papers of the Brook Bridges estates in Goodnestone and neighbouring parishes

Arrangement

Most of the deeds have been preserved in their original bundles and the majority of these bundles also contain abstracts of title. A few 'stray' deeds or papers relate to families connected by marriage (as the Cage family of Milgate and the Palmer family of Wingham).

On the other hand, the papers listed below in the sections, Accounts, Estate and Correspondence were mostly found loose and in no order and they have been grouped in artificial bundles for convenience of reference.

Administrative / biographical background

Introductory note: The principal estates of the Brook Bridges family formed a fairly compact group in the Goodnestone area. The first member of the family to have any connection with this county was Brook Bridges of Grove House in Fulham who purchased the manor of Goodnestone and its mansion house in 1693 and 1700. Further properties were acquired by him and his descendants through the 18th and 19th centuries.
