Description

Private papers, deeds, schedules of evidence, etc., of Robert Devereux, 3rd; 1626-1646. At the end (ff.302-331) are miscellaneous notes by Rev. George Harbin and extracts relating to the Devereux family. Included are:-

1. Rentals of lands of Robert, 3rd Earl of Essex, in Farny and Clancarvell, co. Monaghan, in Ireland; 1627-1639 ff.1-71.

2. Certificate of the payment by Sir Thomas Love, Knt., deceased, of £130 "in preste to the said Erle [of Essex] as Collonell Generall of the Foote in the late expedicion to Cadez in the yeare 1625"; 18 June, 1629. f. 73.

3. Plea in the Exchequer against Robert, Earl of Essex, for not having taken up his knighthood in accordance with the King's writ of 5 Jan. 1 Chas [1625-1626] Mich. term, 7 Chas. I [1631]. Four copies. ff. 76, 81, 85, 89.

4. Assignment by the Earl of Essex to James Lewes and Walter Lloyde of a crown-lease, dat. 28 Nov. 3 Jas. I [1605], for 40 years of the granges of Lloynereball, co. Pemb., and Iscoyde and Castle Cossan, co. Carmarthen, with tenements in Henllian Amgoyde and Llanbedy, co. Carm; etc.; 11 June, 8 Chas. I [1632]. Copy. f.100.

5. Schedule of evidences or deeds of Robert, Earl of Essex, drawn up apparently in 1633; arranged under names of places and including (f.129) "Pattents of Creacion". f.117.

6. Order of the Court of Wards for the payment to Robert, Earl of Essex, according to the will of Sir John Powlett [or Paulet], of £800 to be paid in legacies to Essex Powlett, son of Sir William Powlett, and Mary and Alice his sisters; 2 July, 1634. ff.144, 146. With other papers relating to the estates of Sir John and Sir William Powlett 1634-1638. ff.148, 151, 204, 209-213.

7. Fine by Robert, Earl of Essex and Elizabeth his wife, William [Seymour], Earl of Hertford, and Frances his wife and Sir Walter Devereux, Knt., to John Selden and others, of the manor of Llanthomas, co. Brecon, 1 June, 1636. f. 149.

8. Copies of records in the Registry of the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield respecting the liberties of the canons and their tenants; produced at Lichfield in a cause between Robert, Earl of Essex, and Michael Biddulph and others, 28 Sept. 1636. ff.153, 169. With other papers in the same suit, 1637, f.205.

9. Draft of an assignment by Robert, Earl of Essex, and others his trustees to Sir Walter Devereux of a lease of certain lands, etc. (the description of which is wanting) for 31 years from the death of him, the said Earl, without issue male, with remainder, if Sir Walter die within the term, to Frances, the Earl's sister, wife of William, Earl of Hertford, with further covenant by the Earl, etc, to acquit him of a yearly payment of £1300 to Elizabeth, Countess of Essex, as jointure; 1637. The first sheet missing. f.185.

10. Schedule of 46 deeds and leases etc of Robert, Earl of Essex, relating to lands in co. Pembroke and elsewhere in Wales, 1590-1638. The beginning, containing the first seven numbers, is missing. f.218.

11. Declaration by Robert, Earl of Essex, of the terms on which he will drop a suit in the Star-Chamber against certain persons engaged in a riot against his servants when collecting his tithes at Walton, co. Stafford; 8 July, 1639. f.230.

12. Draft of a lease by Robert, Earl of Essex, to Will. Scudamore, of Ballingham, co. Hereford, of the woods of Haughwood, etc., in Fownhope, Wollhope and Mordiford, co. Heref., for 31 years at a rent of £160; 4 Sept. 1639. f.236.

13. Copies of the will of Robert, Earl of Essex, dat. at the top 4 July, 1642, and at the end 1 Aug. 1642. ff. 252, 256, 260.

14. "A Booke of severall concer[n]ments": narrative by the bailiff of the Earl of Essex for Ross, Ross Farran and Fownhope, co. Heref., of the troubles that befell him in his office during the Civil War, the decay of rents, etc., written apparently in 1659, when the manors had descended to Frances, Marchioness of Hertford. f.266.

15. "A view of writings and evidences concerning the estate of ... Robert, late Earle of Essex, taken at York House, 19o Martii, 1646[7]". f.275.

16. Verses in memory of Robert, 3rd Earl of Essex (d.14 Sept., 1646), and in honour of his sister and co-heir Frances Seymour, Marchioness of Hertford, beg. "Paynte mee a mother weeping att the tombe"; with the initials T.J. at the end. f.300.

18. Table showing the marriages of the three grand-daughters of John de Verdon (temp. Hen. III), viz. Margaret m. John Crophull, Joanna m. Tho. Furnivall, and Elizabeth m. Barth. Burghersh, from whom the Earls of Essex, Shrewsbury and Huntingdon respectively descended; followed by notes from records concerning the Verdon estates, the family of Furnivall, etc. ff. 312-320.

19. Notes by the Rev. George Harbin on the history of the family of Devereux. ff.321-330.

20. Copy of a letter from William Brome to J. Urry, on the family of Devereux and their lands at Weobly, Leonhall, etc. co. Hereford; 17 Aug. 1706. f.331.
