Gallantry Notes: "At 5.45am on the 9th August, the enemy shelled VAUXHALL BRIDGE and set fire to it. The fire was in close proximity to the boxes of explosives placed there for its demolition. These two men (70969 McLinden & 148600 Caygill) who were sentries on the machine guns at VAUXHALL BRIDGE, seeing the danger, rushed to the bridge and succeeded at great personal risk in extinguishing the flames. There is no doubt that, but for the prompt action of these two men, the bridge would have been destroyed and several casualties probably incurred."
