Description

Most of the legal cases in which the Arundells were involved were disputes over property rights See also AR/15 for disputes over right of wreck.

AR/17/70-73 Disputes in the early fifteenth century involving the heirs of Cecily, daughter of Sir John de Knovill.

AR/17/74-77 John Arundell esquire v. John Nanfan, his wife Joan Nanfan (formerly the wife of Sir Remfrey Arundell) and her son Remfrey Arundell esquire. Dispute in 1454-6 over lands in Cornwall.

AR/17/78-79 James Tyrell and his wife Ann Tyrell nee Arundell v. Sir Richard Harecourt and Thomas Arundell. Dispute in 1480 over Lanhadron, Carminow, Kennall, Winnington and Rinsey.

AR/17/80-81 Arundell and Gaverigan v. Mohun. Dispute in 1541-2 over tin-work on Mingham Downs.

AR/17/82-106 West Downs case in 1564-66. See W. Ravenhill and O.J. Padel in the Journal of the Royal Institution of Cornwall, 1995.

AR/17/107-109 Francis Tregian v. Sir John Arundell. 1574

AR/17/110-117 Arundell v. Holman. Hartland dispute in 1574-5.

AR/17/118-125 Hugh Trevanion v. Sir John Arundell and his wife Anne. Anne was previously married to a Trevanion and this dispute in 1677-81 was about provision for the children of that marriage and involved Trinity Chapel and Restormel Park.

AR/17/126-128 Philip Lanyon esquire, Thomas Yonge, gentleman, and his wife Hester v. George Bere and his wife Suzanna. Dispute in c.1680 over the estate of John Lanyon of Plymouth, merchant, deceased.

AR/17/129-143 Dispute in 1736-8 over Sir John Arundell's right to the advowson of Phillack.

AR/17/144-146 Lady Gifford and others v. Mr Lewgent/Nugent[?]. Dispute in 1739 over interest due on money.

AR/17/147-179 Pigott v. Gifford and Arundell. Several of the parties involved in this case appear to have died during its course from 1750 to 1757. The subject of the dispute may have been the estate of Nathaniel Pigott who had died before the case opened and was represented by his brother Adam Pigott. Adam had died by 11 November 1751 and was replaced by Charles Pigott who in turn was dead by 12 July 1755 and replaced by Nathaniel Pigott junior, grandson of Nathaniel senior. On the Arundell side Lady Gifford was replaced after her death in February 1752 by Lord and Lady Arundell. Lord Arundell died in 1756 before the end of the case.

AR/17/180-190 John Burgess, Hugh Bullock and his wife Mary v. Philip Collier, rector of St Columb Major, James Bishop, Dame Frances (Gifford and Mary Arundell. Chancery case in 1734-46 about a house in St Columb town.

AR/17/191 - 203 Thomas Rowe v. William Hodge. King's Bench case in c.1760 about a dispute over Tresawsin Common in Perranzabuloe parish and Tresithney manor.

AR/17/204 - 214 Michael Williams and Robert Goodright v. Edward Harris. Mineral dispute in 1768-70 over Cosgarne in Gwennap parish.

AR/17/215 - 225 William Tyacke v. James Hoskyn and Nicholas Harris (all tenants of Pengwedna manor). Action in 1770-73 for trespass on land at Breage.

AR/17/226 - 232 Lord Arundell v. William Pilkington. Dispute in 1800-1 over sale of timber from Cornish manors.
