Administrative / biographical background

The Knight family have been in Cuckfield since the early 19th century, when Stephen Knight (1775-1858) bought Brocketts and established a small building firm there. The firm was subsequently run by his son (1806-1886), grandson (1848-1935), great-grandson (1888-1969) and great-great-grandson (1921-), all of whom were named Stephen, and constructed many important local buildings, including the Queen's Hall and Public Library in Cuckfield, and the offices of Cuckfield Rural District Council in Boltro Road, Haywards Heath. The family firm became Stephen Knight & Co. Ltd. in 1909, and Newstar Investment Limited in 1982, and was wound up voluntarily in 1983.
