Description

"The Generall Inventory of all such goods of .... the Earle of Leycester as remayned at Killingworth, Leycester house, Grafton, Court and Wainsted upon the laste viewes taken"; comprising the Earl's household and other effects at his death (4 Sept. 1588). The separate inventories are as follows:-

(a) Household goods in the charge of Thos. Underhill at Kenilworth, 13 Oct 1588, including Pictures and Books, the latter consisting only of a Bible and seven Psalters. f.2;- (b) "Bedding, hanginges and other stuffe" in charge of the same at Grafton, co. Northt., 17 Oct. 1588, f.25:-(c) "Plate, glasses, pewter, vessell, kitchenn stuffe", etc. in the charge of Thos. Cole at Kenilworth, 1584 and 1588. f.28;- (d) "Table clothes, towells Napkins and other Naperie" in the charge of Ann King at Kenilworth, 16 Oct. 1588. f.31;- (e) "Ordnaunce and Municion", at Kenilworth, 12 Oct. 1588. f.35:- (f) "sheetes and Pillow beres "sent from Kenilworth to Leicester House, 17 Oct. 1588. f.37

(g) "Golde plate, parcell guilt plate and plaine plate" at Leicester House 29 Sept. 1585, including among the "Vauses" (f.41) "A laver, the boddie of a strainge shell of a fishe", supported by "a manachin" and surmounted by Neptune, "given by Sir Walter Ralighe, 1584". f38;- (h) "Jewells, as collers, Georges, Aggattes, Brootchs, Garters, Ringes, Buttons, etc," remaining at Court. f.50. Included (f.52) is "A ring of gold enamiled black with a fayer tabel diamond in it, cutt lozeng wise with these letters in it E.R" noted as "not prised". This inventory also includes "Sweete Bagges", shirts, "handcarchers", etc, and (f.54) six books, viz. "Two Bookes, one of thorder of Ingland (sc. the Garter) in parchment written, one other of the order of St Michaell printed", "My Lo. pedigree", "A discour[c]e of the saftye of the Realme", and "A little prayer booke with my Lo. of Hunttingtons badg or thone side and the ragged staffe on ye other, with silver boses, covered with blew vellet";- (i) "Wardrob stuffe, Hanginges and other furniture of Howshold" at Leicester House, 17 Dec. 1588, including Pictures (f.59b), Maps (f.65), Robes (f.84) and "Apparrell" (f.85). f.55;- (k) "Such Robes... as remained at Courte", 1588, including also "clokes", "Paned hose", "Dublettes", "Hattes and cappes", "Bootehose", "Weapnes", etc. f.93;- (l) "All such stuffe as remained in the custodie of Nicholas Webber at Wainsted 1588", including Books (f.124b and Pictures (f.125) f.105.
