Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume P3 is the third in the series of three 'P' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Lichfield vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith and Messrs. Smith & Watkins. The preferments in this volume concern the Lichfield Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1876 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 7 July 1876 by Order in Council. However, there is a couple of survey reports concerning Litchfield Bishoprick Estates at the front of the volume (which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 19 October 1867 by vacancy).; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Stafford, parishes of Lichfield St. Chad, Lichfield St.Michael, Alrewas, Cannock, Chebsey, Dilhorne, Eccleshall, Rugeley, Harborne, Statfold, Shenstone & Haslour; the county of Cheshire, parish of Tarvin; the county of Northhampton, the parishes of Long Buckby; the county of Lincoln, parish of Thornton; the county of Derby, parishes of Bakewell, Chapel en le Frith, Hope & Tideswell; and the county of Warwick, parish of Edgbaston.
