Description

Letter of Daniel Spencer, Worshipful Master, Royal Lebanon Lodge, Gloucester addressed to Robert Read, Prisoner of War, Longwy Department, La Moselle, France informing him about funds raised for his support by Lodge members and also from Mr Parker and Mr Wadley. The Antients' Grand Lodge has sent his Masonic certificate and Spencer showed the letter to his wife and family who send their love. Spencer is now sending the certificate and funds to Read.

Administrative / biographical background

Royal Lebanon Lodge was granted a warrant by the Antients' Grand Lodge on 18 January 1799 to meet as No. 316 and named in 1801. It met at the Boothall Inn, Westgate Street, Gloucester from 1799. After the union between the Antients' Grand Lodge and Moderns' Grand Lodge in 1813 to form the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813, the Lodge received the number No. 401. In 1817 the Lodge moved to the Bell Inn, Southgate Street, Gloucester and in 1821 to private rooms in New Inn Lane, Gloucester. The Lodge was erased on 5 December 1838.
