Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume LL9 is the nineth in the series of nine 'LL' volumes, which covers various Vicars Choral Estates and Minor Canons Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the following Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by commutation: London St. Paul's Vicars Choral Estates on 29 September 1871 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 13 August 1872 by Order in Council; London St. Paul's Minor Canons Estates (corporate) on 25 March 1875 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 10 August 1875 by Order in Council; London St. Paul's Minor Canons Estates (separate) on 29 June 1875 (by St. Paul's Cathedral London Minor Canonries Act 1875); Salisbury Vicars Choral Estates (part of property) on 25 March 1867 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 15 May 1868 by Order in Council; and Wells Vicars Choral Estates (part of property) on 24 June 1866 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 13 November 1866 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Essex, parishes of Finchingfield, Halstead and Steeple Bumpstead; the county of Berkshire, parish of West Hanney; and the county of Somerset, parishes of Wells St. Andrew, Wells St. Cuthbert (in) and Wells St. Cuthbert (out).
