Description (What the record is about)
-
Most of the properties belonged at one time to one of the following brewers
Herbert Verrall Chapman (later Chapman Bros) of the East Guldeford Brewery
Edwin Finn and Co of Lydd, Kent
Hurst and Co of Eastbourne
Alfred Leney and Co of the Phoenix Brewery, Dover
Smith and Co of Lamberhurst
Star Brewery Co of Eastbourne
Albert Frederick Style (later Style and Winch Ltd)
The deeds listed here have come into the possession of Courage Ltd as a result of brewery mergers since the late nineteenth century
The deposited documents are those no longer required to establish title. The lists attempt to clarify the descent of the property to its recent owners: consequently, some categories of documents - for example, mortgages - are not noted separately, unless they provide additional information. Owners of adjoining property, too, have not been specified. The individual documents are referred to in brackets by the series and file numbers, e.g. AMS5681/24/5 = AMS5681/24/5. The houses involved include the former Beckley parish workhouse (38), and a Hastings schoolhouse (3). Areas of urban estate development and building in the second half of the nineteenth century - particularly in Eastbourne, Hastings and Brighton - are also shown on plans, attached to the deeds of what was doubtless intended to be estate pub
