Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume M2 is the second in the series of eight 'M' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Gloucester and Bristol, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Gloucester and Bristol Bishoprick Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 6 June 1856 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 9 December 1856 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Gloucester and Bristol Episcopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 25 March 1867 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 23 August 1867. These estates were then later transferred back to the Church Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 October 1954 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 26 November 1954.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Gloucestershire, parishes of Hardwick, Standish, Saul, Henbury, Hartpury, Hinton on the Green, Horfield, Filton, Westbury upon Trym, Maisemore, Minsterworth, Shipton Sollers, Shipton Oliffe, Upton St. Leonards, Preston, Taynton, Aldsworth & Vineyard Hill (extra parochial); the county of Somerset, parishes of Tickenham, Clevedon & Portbury; the county of Herefordshire, parishes of Hope Mansell, Kilpeck, Much Cowarne, Much Dewchurch & Llanwarne; the county of Monmouthshire, parishes of St. Woollos, Christ Church & Bettws; and the county of Hampshire and Isle of Wight, parishes of Lymington & Newchurch.
