He was wounded on 7th June and died at 4th London Gen Hospital, Denmark Hill on 13th June. He was the son opf Mr Bernard Gately of Liverpool and was educated at St Francis Xaviers College and at Univ of Liverpool. He had a brilliant career at the Univ. taking a double first in Economics and History. After leaving he was appointed Professor of Economics at Agra and was afterwards transferred to a professorship at Government College, Lahore. At the outbreak of war hr joined the Army and served for some time in India. In 1916 he came to France with the Indian Cavalry, but as the cavalry had too little to do for his eager temprement he joined the MGC and it was whilst serving with this unit in the Irish Division he received the wounds to which he succumbed. Lieut Gately was well known and liked among a large circle in Liverpool and his death will be greatly regretted. One who has followed his career closely, in a letters to the deceased's father says "your son was no ordinary man, his mond was original and his spirit adventureous. He not only took risks but sought them and from early days I regarded him as one who had it in him to achieve distinction. He has indeed the adventureous spirit of the Irishman and his csholarship never weighed down the natural buoyancy of his temperament. He was inclined at one time to take up journalism and it was a career which would have suited him admirably for he had an alert mind and was verty ready with his pen. When he was in this country recently traing for machine gun work and ever after he returned to France, he did book reviews for the Liverpool Post. But he was keenly interested in India and its problems and this country could send few better representitives to its great dependancy than Lt Gately with his wide and lively sympathies and his happy and generous nature."
