Administrative / biographical background

Joe and Alice Bracegirdle are brother and sister, and half-brother and sister to Albert Bracegirdle senior (see Tape no.109, and deposit no.46 for more details about the family). They lived at 'Muddy Lane', off Woodhouse Lane, Heyhead. Joe went to Shadow Moss school, Heyhead and later worked on his father's market garden, and was a teamsman for him, driving the produce on horse-drawn lorries to Manchester market. Alice didn't go to school, and at the age of 10 went to work for a family called Hamnett at Cross Acres to help in their market garden. Later she seems to have looked after individual children for working mothers. She was born 3.12.1900 and Joe was born 14.7.1897.
