war diary 207 Coy 12/4/1917: "about 10.20pm the enemy attempted to raid our trenches at Hobbs Farm. Upon the SOS signal being sent up from our front line the gun at "O" position opened fire at 10.21 and kept firing until the raiders were driven off. This work was very commendable because, owing to the closed in position of the gun emplacement the gun team were all overpowered by the cordite fumes from the gun. Lt Fitt and 53132 Sgt Pearce both helped in firing the gun under trying conditions and assisted materially in the recovery of the three men who had been overcome by the fumes, only one of whom had to be taken to the First Aid Post. Lt Fitt was himself overcome for a little while but remained at his post.War diary 207 Coy 19/5/1917 - killed instantly by a high explosive shell in Reading Trench - Cpl S Stead badly wounded.
