Administrative / biographical background

John Joseph Briggs (1819-1876) was a notable antiquarian, poet and naturalist. He was born at Kings Newton in Melbourne, Derbyshire. Briggs attended schools at Wymesworld, Leicestershire, and Darley, Derbyshire, and was apprenticed to W. Bemrose & Sons, printers of Derby. As a result of ill health, however, he did not complete his apprenticeship and returned to Kings Newton to assist his parents with the running of their farm.
