Administrative / biographical background

Until the incorporation of Brighton on 1 April 1854 this division, based at Brighton, included both Brighton and Hove. Hove formed a separate division until 1904 when the borough received a separate commission of the peace. From 1904 both the Borough and County Benches sat at Hove Town Hall. On 1 April 1974 the Borough and County Divisions were merged to form the new Hove Division.
