Administrative / biographical background

The owners of the estate at this period were Christopher Turnor (1809-1886), his son Edmund Turnor (1838-1903) and Edmund's nephew Christopher Hatton Turnor (d. 1940).

The South Lincolnshire part of the estate was based around the family's residence at Stoke Rochford Hall and, as of 1835, comprised land in the parishes of Colsterworth with Twyford and Woolsthorpe, Creeton, Stoke Rochford (North and South Stoke) with Easton, and Skillington (with Sewstern, Leicestershire).

The North Lincolnshire/Mid Lincolnshire part of the estate was based around the family's other residence at Panton Hall. As of 1835, the most significant parts were Stixwould, Wragby, East Kirkby, Panton, Barlings and Kirmond le Mire, with other property in the following parishes: Addlethorpe, Apley (Kingthorpe), Bardney (Southrow), Binbrook, Blankney, Burgh le Marsh and Croft, Coleby, Coningsby, East Barkwith, East Torrington, Frieston, Holton cum Beckering, Horsington (including Poolham), Langton by Wragby (including Strubby), Lissington, Mareham on the Hill, Martin, Stainton by Langworth (Newbold), and Wispington.

There were also holdings of land in Parwich and Snitterton, Derbyshire, and Sheen, Staffordshire.

The estate is discussed in 'The Turnors and their Wragby Estates' by Terence R Leach (R BOX L. 929.2 TUR/LEA) and in 'Lincolnshire People and Places' edited by Christopher Sturman (SR L. 942 STU).

N.B. The North Lincolnshire estate, centred on Panton and Wragby, was sold in August 1917.
