Administrative / biographical background

There has been a stone-built parish church on the present site since at least 1220. The Anglo-Saxon Angel Stone, discovered amongst the infill of the wall of the south porch during alteration work in the 19th century proves that a stone church was on the site or nearby even earlier. Parish Clerks first had to keep written records of baptisms, marriages and burials by law under the Act of Thomas Cromwell in 1530. This was modified in 1590 by Elizabeth so that the records had to be maintained on parchment, bound in registers, with all surviving earlier records since the beginning of her reign being copied into the new format. The Parish of Manchester's records survive from 1573.
