Administrative / biographical background

Hollington County Primary School was originally a National School. Kelly's Directory of Sussex for 1862 states that 'a new school-house for boys and girls has lately been erected; it is a neat building of red brick and cost £320, which was raised by subscription'. In 1871 the school was taken over by Hollington School Board. In 1872 the Sunday School was taken over as Hollington Board Infants' School and the girls were also transferred there in January 1873. The boys remained at the National School until a new boys' department was opened in 1880. In October 1897 the Hollington School Board was abolished and the school came under the control of the Hastings United School Board. In April 1903, following the 1902 Education Act, the school was taken over by the Education Committee of the Borough of Hastings

Hastings Education Committee decided to reorganise the school and accommodate a special school for defective and epileptic children in the boys' department, due to the need to adopt the provisions of the Elementary Education (Defective and Epileptic Children) Act, 1914. The premises occupied by the girls and infants were converted into Senior Mixed, and Junior Mixed and Infants Departments with effect from 27 November 1916. In 1927, following a reorganisation of schools at Hollington and Silverhill, Silverhill became a senior mixed school and Hollington a junior mixed. The infants' school remained. The school was situated on the western side of Battle Road, between the Alberta Road and Parkfield Road turnings, next to the Royal Albert public house. Both the Junior and Infants' Schools remained on this site until the Infants' School moved to Quebec Road in the early 1950s. The trade directories list the Infants' School in Quebec Road by 1953, although it was still in Battle Road in 1950. The Junior School remained at Battle Road until September 1974 when it moved to its present site in Beauchamp Road

The infants and junior schools merged in September 1997. In July 1999 the old junior school building in Beauchamp Road was vacated, and the school moved into an extension at the infants' school, Quebec Road
