ESTATE CORRESPONDENCE

These letters are mainly to and from the Arundells' stewards in Cornwall and elsewhere in the south-west and are in chronological order. Some have been bundle-listed and in these cases have been placed at the earliest date in the bundle. Many of the letters are simply about estate business such as the setting of leases, collection of rents and holding of manorial courts and may include references to wrecks and mining. More unusual items of news have been noted for those letters listed individually.

This section includes some personal correspondence to and from George Bere who was the Arundells' steward at Lanherne from circa 1685 to 1720. His correspondents include Lydia Tonkin, a cousin from Newlyn, and members of the Bere family in London and Exeter. Some of the Beres, particularly those in Exeter, helped the Arundells by granting them bills of exchange and forwarding on goods from London and this is probably why these letters were kept with the estate correspondence.
