The papers were bequeathed to the College upon Balfour's death in 1944.

Administrative / biographical background

Ronald Edmund Balfour (1904 - 1944) was educated at Eton and King's, matriculating in 1922. He was elected a Fellow of the College in 1928 and Lecturer in History in 1930. During the Second World War he held administrative posts with the French section of the Ministry of Information, then worked in Winchester and York interviewing recruits, and finally with the Monuments section of SHAEF. He died in a shell-burst, while trying to save archives at Cleves. He bequeathed his personal library of 8,000 books to be divided between the University Library and the College Library.
