Description

Testament: Bequeaths to the Queen, a jewel worth £300.

Provides £300 for her executors to set up a hospital for the poor in Westminster. They are after incorporation to assure the Manor of Braynsburton, co. Yorks., to the corporation leasing it to some person for 100 years subject to a rent of £100.

Arranges for the purchase of certain ground for the hospital which is to be called Emmanuel Hospital or a similar name.

Bequeaths to her bro. [Thomas Sackville] Lord Buckhurst, her jewel of the Queen's picture, to her friends the Lady Marchioness of Northampton, the Countess of Warwick (Anne, wid. of Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick), Lady of Hunsdon and Lord of Hunsden (Henry, 1st Baron Hunsdon, 1524-96; see D.N.B.) respectively remembrances of £20, £30, £20 and £30.

Bequeaths to Lady Cecill, w. of Robert Cecill, kt. (1563?-1612; see D.N.B.), her best chain of gold, stone and pearl, and to her friend Lady Compton, her round jewel set thick with diamonds.

Bequeaths to her friend Mr. Vice Chamberlain [in margin Sir Thomas Hennage] (d. 1595; see D.N.B.), a silver vessel worth £200 and one of her best horses.

Bequeaths to Lady Sheffield (wife of Edmund, 3rd Baron) one diamond pointed without a foil and £100, and to Sir Thomas Egerton, kt.. master of the rolls ((1540?-1617; see D.N.B.) £30 to be bestowed in some remembrance.

Bequeaths to Mr. Justice Owen (Thomas. d. 1598; see D.N.B.), £30, and to her nephew Mr. Robert Sackville (later 2nd Earl of Dorset, 1561-1609; see D.N.B.), a ring set with 7 diamonds and a pair of silver flagons.

Bequeaths to Lady Scudamore a pair of borders of gold and best suite of buttons.

Bequeaths to Lady Weller £40, a cross of rubies with one diamond, her house at Chanon and 17 yards of wrought velvet.

Bequeaths to nieces, Lady Mountague. Mrs. Nevill and Lady Gleman, £100 each. Bequeaths to Mrs. Goringe, w. of George. a pair of borders with a chain of pearl, gowns of velvet and kirtles of velvet or cloth of gold and silver or laid on with gold lace. Bequeaths to Mrs. Bowyer. Mr. Goringe's sister, one pair of borders with pearl, and her old chain with pearl.

Bequeaths to the Lord Bishop of Worcester a cup of the value £6 13s. 4d., and to Mr. Justice Fenner (Edward. d. 1612 ; see D.N.B.), household stuff and goods at his house at Hayes, £100 worth of stuff more. six pair of fine sheets and 2 suits of damask. Bequeaths to George Goring, household stuff worth £200 to remain in his house of Danny for his son, and to Mr. Bowle such stuff as the testatrix has lent him at Dormans-well.

Bequeaths to Edward Moore (1537 ?-1620; see D.N.B.). all the lease. leases and term of years in the lands called Stanlakes once bought of Richard Sands, gent.

Bequeaths to Robert Chamberlain. esq., £40, to Sir Drew Drewrye (1531 ?-1617; see D.N.B.) £100, to Mr. Roger Manners (later 5th Earl of Rutland, 1576-1612; see D.N.B.) 100 marks, and to nephew Thomas Sackvile £100.

Bequeaths to Mr. Philip Scudamore, Mr. Chamberlaine's father-in-law, £10, to Anne Fenner, her god-daughter, one of her gentlewomen. £500, and to Elizabeth Bowle £100.

Bequeaths to her gentlewomen all her wearing linen. gowns, and kirtles, and to an unmarried gentlewoman (un-named) 200 marks.

Bequeaths to Mr. Bowle, Hedgers Farm in Northcott and Southall, co. Middx. for 120 years at £20.

Bequeaths to Thomas Billott and George Hooper her servants, £40 each. to Goodwife Pynck, £5 and her house for 21 years at 40s. to Dorothy, her servant £5, and to Richard Barnard and John Lower, her servants, £5 and 5 marks respectively.

Bequeaths to the other servants half a year's wages. to Francis More £30, to Goodwife Cook £3 6s. 8d.. Elizabeth Aredoc. £3 6s. 8d.. to Joan her servant 40s., in addition to her wages and to Mrs. Warde of Chelsea, £5.

Will: Devises to her exors. her house at Chelsea, all other lands in Chelsea, Kensington. and Brompton. co. Middx. for half a year after her decease, remainder to Sir William Cecyle, kt.. [1st] Baron Burghley, Lord Treasurer of England (1530-98; see D.N.B.) for life, remainder to Sir Robert Cecell his s. and the testatrix's friend. Lady Cicell his w. and their heirs

Orders that her exors. maintain the house in which she dies and provide for her servants during the half year after her decease.

Devises to Justice Fenner and his heirs the house called Hayes and all lands called Hayes Park Hall, co. Middx., all freehold and copyhold lands in the parish of Hayes, and the Manor of Cowley Peachey, co. Middx. except lands called Highefeelds in Hillingdon and one wood (60a.).

Devises to her nephew Mr. Robert Sackvile, the Manor of Barwick, house and land called the Vyne Garden and household stuff there.

Devises Dacre House near Tuttell in Westminster to exors. for one year, with remainder to nephew Robert Sackvile and his heirs.

Devises to George Goringe, his w. and heirs, the Manors of Woodhall, Elwardbie and Tharklebye, co. Yorks.

Devises to her exors. lands in Dormanswell, Southall and Norcott, co. Middx. for 4 years, remainder to her bro.-in-law Sampson Leonard and his w., the testatrix's late lord's sister, and heirs, remainder to her neice Leonard who married Lady Waller's s. and her heirs. These lands are subject to a lease of Hedgers Farm to Mr. Bowles, Fynches Farm to John Coe, and of leases to Assector and Vincent. The Manors of Norwoode, Osterleighe and Twykenham are to go to her exors. and their heirs. Sampson Leonard is to pay the exors. £2000 according to a former agreement for the conveyance of the property.

Devises to her servant, John Yonge, the lease of a tenement called the Falcon in Chelsea where wid. Cheswicke lives, for 21 years and £10, and to her servant William Hathwell £10 and the discharge from a debt.

The lands called Stanlakes previously devised to Edward More are after further search found to be leased by the name of the site of the Manor of Hinton Piparde. The latter is therefore now devised to Edward More in the same manner as Stanlakes.

Devises all other manors, and lands in cos. Berks., Wilts., Dorset, Middx., Sussex, Yorkshire and the city of Westminster as well as goods, debts and chattels not before devised to her exors. and their heirs.

Desires to be buried with her husband at Chelsea.

If she dies before she can surrender the customary lands in Hayes to Justice Fenner, he is to be recompensed from other lands

No part of the Manor of Southall is to be devised to her exors. but is to be to bro. Leonard, his w. and d.

Notwithstanding a former exception in her will, her nephew Robert Sackvill is to have such household stuff in her coffers in the garret over her woman's chamber, except writings, deeds and conveyances.

Bequeaths to Frederick White, and John Sherley, her servants £6 13s. 4d. and £10 respectively.

Appoints Mr. Justice Fenner, Sir Drew Drewry, kt., George Goringe and Edward More (1537?-1620; see D.N.B.), esqs. exors., and the Lord Treasurer of England [William Cecil] overseer. The latter is to have £200.

Witnesses: Edward Graunte, Richard Woode, Marmaduke Servante, Thomas Cole, Morrice Pickering.
