Custodial history (Describes where and how the record has been held from creation to transfer to The National Archives)
-
The files comprising this series were found among the records transferred to the Modern Records Section by the former Clerk's Department of Caernarfonshire County Council in January 1987. The County Clerk was also Clerk to the Peace and had no separate staffs to deal with each of his functions, and it was therefore natural that Quarter Sessions administrative files should be a part of the Clerk's Department system.
-
Selection and destruction information (Information about how the record was selected for archiving)
-
The files here are those from this series selected for permanent preservation, mainly being files relating to policy matters, compensation authority (refusal to grant new licences) matters, freemasons' returns, and general files relating to the magistracy. Files relating to appeals from lower courts, minor administrative matters, etc. have been destroyed, but a schedule is available. The files relating to substantive cases in Quarter Sessions are preserved as a continuation of the long series of Quarter Sessions rolls, and Appeals Committee minute books are also available, being treated as separate series, having been accessioned at different dates. It would however, appear that initially all files relating to Quarter Sessions were given a purely sequential numerical reference prefixed by 'Q', and this includes files preserved in the rolls series, in this deposit, and those destroyed as being unworthy of permanent preservation.
